Conditions for Learning was on view at the Kingsbury Gallery during the summer of 2023. It consisted of landscape paintings and monotypes from observation, memory, and imagination. The work includes an exploration of colored canvas as a painting surface which was approached first with acrylic paints and then sealed before completion with oil paints. There are also works on panels consisting of discarded student painting palettes. The existing colors and surface features prompted compositions and final color schemes.

The exhibition title refers to a theory of learning developed by Robert Gagné which asserts that in order for learning to occur, there are both internal and external conditions that must be met. Eager as we may be to learn, we are always subject to forces outside of ourselves.
